Dizziness and vertigo can quite literally throw your entire life off balance. If you have lightheadedness, nausea and/or the feeling that your surroundings are spinning out of control, you may find it difficult, hazardous or even impossible to conduct your everyday tasks. As frightening as these symptoms can be, however, there's usually a benign underlying reason for them, which means that they can be treated through conservative care. Our Downtown Calgary chiropractor here at Bankers Hall Chiropractic can provide safe, natural, effective solutions to help you tell up from down once again.
Dizziness and vertigo are two terms that are often used interchangeably, but they actually refer to slightly different situations:
Dizziness - Dizziness is a broad term describing symptoms such as lightheadedness, faintness and disorientation. It may be caused by a wide range of conditions and stimuli, from medications to tumors. In many cases, it is caused by a misalignment in the upper cervical spine where the spinal column joins the skull. If the top bones in the spinal column are out of balance, so is your head. The resulting confusion in the sensory signals reaching your brain creates a condition called cervicogenic dizziness. Cervical misalignment may also reduce circulation in the cervical arteries, another possible cause of dizziness.
Vertigo - Vertigo is specifically caused by a problem in the vestibular system, a network of canals in the inner ear that use fluid to interpret physical balance and spatial information for the brain. When bits of calcium or other debris break loose and float through the vestibular system, it can disrupt the system's ability to do its job properly. Vertigo is characterized by a spinning sensation that makes your environment appear to be rotating around you.
If you are tortured by unexplained dizziness or vertigo, bring your symptoms to Bankers Hall Chiropractic. Our Downtown Calgary chiropractor will take note of your medical history, including any medicines or pre-existing conditions that might be creating the problem. You'll then receive a thorough examination that includes a spinal screening to see whether your head is sitting off-kilter due to an upper cervical imbalance. If that appears to be the case, we can administer small but effective chiropractic adjustments to restore normal upper cervical alignment. High-precision, low-force techniques such as the Activator method are ideal for making these kinds of fine adjustments.
If you suffer from vertigo, we can provide you with natural, non-invasive remedies to help you get your condition under control. For example, we can teach you a technique you can administer to yourself at home known as Brandt-Daroff exercises. This set of exercises involves alternating between sitting up in bed and lying on first one side and then the other. A regular schedule of these exercises can help settle free-floating debris in the vestibular system.
