Carpal tunnel syndrome is a repetitive stress injury that occurs when the carpal bones within the wrist apply pressure to the surrounding nerves. The bones ‘tunnel’ together, pinching the nerve leading into the hand and fingers. Often caused as a result of excessive computer use or stress on the wrist, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause significant pain and diminished quality of life for those who suffer with the condition.
The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may be minor at first, progressively worsening over time. A person may first feel weakness or fatigue in the hands and wrist when working or typing. Eventually, the condition may cause tingling, loss of finger and thumb strength, a sensation of swelling, and severe pain that radiates from the hand into the arm and shoulder.
Anyone who applies frequent stress to the wrist can develop carpal tunnel syndrome, though the condition is most common in certain types of occupations. People who grip small tools or type on a keyboard are at the greatest risk. Examples include office workers, mechanics, hair stylists and nail technicians. Women are more prone to the condition than men, and it is most commonly seen in patients between the ages of 30 and 60. Certain conditions like pregnancy and obesity can also increase a person’s risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome.
Here at Bankers Hall Chiropractic in Downtown Calgary, we offer natural, non-invasive treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. We recommend seeing a chiropractor as soon as the symptoms of carpal tunnel appear, as early diagnosis can lead to improved outcomes. Carpal tunnel therapy may include chiropractic joint adjustment and hand and wrist exercises that mobilize, stretch and strengthen soft tissues. We may also recommend resting or wearing splints to allow the wrist time to heal and recover.
Our treatments are designed to relieve the pressure on the median nerve caused by narrowed carpal bones. By treating the source of the condition rather than just the pain, patients experience reduced inflammation, less swelling and restored control of muscle and finger movements. In fact, the majority of people with carpal tunnel syndrome can recover with conservative chiropractic treatment, allowing them to avoid more invasive procedures to treat the condition, such as surgery. We can also provide tips, such as sitting with improved posture or taking frequent rest breaks, which may help deter the recurrence or worsening of carpal tunnel syndrome in the future.
