While chiropractors are well-known for using spinal adjustments for treating neck and back pain, chiropractors also use other types of therapies to treat a variety of injuries. The type of treatment used largely depends on the type of injury and its severity. One such form of treatment that our Calgary chiropractor uses to treat a wide range of injuries is called shockwave therapy.
Here are some of the most frequent questions we have heard regarding shockwave therapy. If you have further questions, we would be happy to answer them. Contact us through our online form, or call (403) 243-0111.
What Exactly Is Shockwave Therapy?
This FDA-approved type of treatment is non-invasive and uses abrupt pulses of mechanical energy that are similar to acoustic sound waves. When providing shockwave therapy, our chiropractor will apply a lubricating gel to the shockwave therapy wand and then place the wand against your skin over the injured area. Once the wand gets activated, acoustic waves are sent through the skin to the injured tissue. When the injured tissue gets stimulated, the body is prompted to send nutrients and blood to the area, increasing the flow of oxygenated blood and stimulating the body's innate ability to heal.
Is Shockwave Therapy Painful?
This type of therapy uses a low-energy shockwave machine so that no anesthesia or injections are required. You may feel mild discomfort or feel a dull ache as the shockwave wand presses against the injured part of your body, but other than that, it is not painful. There's no recovery time, and after you receive shockwave therapy treatments, you'll be able to resume your normal activities afterward.
What Types of Injuries Does Shockwave Therapy Treat?
Shockwave therapy is largely used to treat kidney stones but in the area of chiropractic medicine, chiropractors have also been able to treat injuries to the soft tissue, bones, and joints. Some of the injuries our Calgary chiropractor can effectively treat with shockwave therapy include:
Besides treating injuries, shockwave therapy can also be used to alleviate certain symptoms, such as loss of flexibility, muscle cramps, spasms, and loss of range of motion.
What are Some Advantages Shockwave Therapy Provides?
There are many benefits to using shockwave therapy for certain injuries. Besides being a drug-free, a noninvasive and painless method of treatment, other advantages shockwave therapy provides include:
One more advantage is that because the skin doesn't get penetrated, there is no risk of infection.
How Long Does Each Treatment Take?
The time for each treatment depends on the type of injury and its severity. For most people, the wand is held in place or is moved over the injured area from 5 to 10 minutes per treatment session. Our chiropractor will let you know how many treatments you will need.
